A taste of Japanese pictography.

Note:: Just because I mention these characters are Japanese, it does not mean I'm implying that they're not Chinese also. There are common characters in Japanese and Chinese -- (most of) these characters probably fall into this "common to Japanese and Chinese" category. The only reason I hesitated to say "all these characters are Chinese also" is because I do not speak/read/write Chinese.

I'm actually flattered that my font generated all this discussion! But please, let's not argue over whether it's Japanese or Chinese, because it's BOTH (through the consensus of those who have commented), not EITHER/OR :)

These fonts are not Japanese...They are Chinese...There is a huge difference between the two although the Japanese language actually evolved from Chinese. Still, the general design is not too bad, although some definitions of the characters are not entirely accurate...

Mr. *David Taylor* aka opalmantra, that's news to me, I've been writing kanji since age 5, and from a Japanese background so I know what's Japanese and what's not -- and these *are* Japanese! There are common characters to Chinese/Japanese, as there are characters that are Chinese and not Japanese, and then there are characters that are Japanese and not Chinese. Yes Japanese did evolve from Chinese and in the transition some new Japanese characters were created, probably starting off as mistakes in the translation. As for the meanings it is difficult to be absolutely accurate with one kanji and a one-word english translation each. But the general meaning is correct.

Nice font. The debate about whether it is Chinese or Japanese is stupid. The word Kanji can be transliterated as "Chinese Character". Most of the characters in that font mean the same thing in Chinese anyway. By the way, DazzlingDesigns, you may want to include huku (good fortune) in the next version.

You're all wrong. First of all, Han characters are currently in use in 3 languages. These are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. In Mandarin Chinese, these characters are called Hanzi. In Japanese, they're called Kanji. In Korean, they're called Hanja.

Second of all, you can't transliterate Roman characters into Roman characters. You can't transliterate "Kanji" into Roman characters because it is already transliterated. What you've done is TRANSLATE "Kanji". You _can_, however, transliterate Š¿Žš into Roman characters, and it transliterates as "Kanji" (if you're speaking Japanese, that is). Plus, that doesn't translate as Chinese character. It translates as "Han Dynasty Character[s]".

While there are region- and language-specific characters, they can basically be regarded as the same script.

Also, Japanese didn't evolve from Chinese. Japanese is in the Turkic branch of the Ural-Altaic language family, and is a distant relative of Turkish (surprise!). Being spoken where it is, it has soaked up quite a bit of vocabulary from Chinese. That's what the On readings of Kanji are. The Kun readings are the Japanese readings, the words that are distantly related to Turkish.

Now, the standard on the Chinese Mainland and in Singapore is Simplified Chinese. It isn't of completely natural origin (a government took the script and simplified it).

Also, I don't think this font belongs in this section. A foreign imitation is a font that is supposed to look like another script even though it is really the Roman script. This should be classified as Dingbats (even if the characters do have meaning, they _are_ Kanji, not Roman letters)

Aaaboyz1, English is not my first language, and I often get confused between translate and transliterate. I think that transliterate means to translate literally (which is what it should mean).

Also, the written form of Japanese MUST have come from Chinese. The spoken form may have come from wherever the **** you say it comes from but the written form is definately from Chinese.

And stop being so god damn fussy. You are one of these people who always 'knows' they are right so they have to go and correct everybody and make themselves look like nerds. Not many people like being corrected with a huge answer that they will forget in a week anyway.

Okay. i have to clarify some things here, though i don't know why i'm doing this. First, these words *are* Chinese. i'm chinese, i should know. plus, i have to write these d*mn words almost everyday, and i can tell you for sure these are the older chinese words. As for where the Japanese came from, my gosh, i can tell you that they definitely aren't a distant relative of the Turkish. if you say that to the Japanese, they'll laugh their heads off. But i have to say, the idea is amusing.

I come from Hong Kong. My first language is Chinese and I have learned a little bit Japanese. Most of the characters can be Chinese or Japanese characters. But some of them are Japanese ones evolved from Chinese.

These are Chinese. I had to do a whole unit on studying Chinese because I pissed the Chinese teacher off(What else is new). The font is nice, but you do need to think more about the people rating you. If you reply to them like this, they will continue to reply to you nastily. And my second rant, make some changes on it. Add more characters, ah. I'll shut up before I start to nag too much. Though it is hardly what the others have done.

Here's my 2 cents.

It IS true that those words are Chinese/Japanese/Korean, BUT the meanings under them are from the Japanese versions. If it were Chinese, it would look weird since some of those can't really stand alone like the one for courage. In Chinese, it's not just that character, it's supposed to have another one beside it.

Wala lang. :) Hehe. That's neither Chinese, Japanese, nor Korean. :P

Feigning_innocen really didn't get the point of a possible Turkish link. It's the language that's related, not the people of course! If everyone would just read Wikipedia. Quote: "Though completely unrelated, Japanese has been heavily influenced by Chinese over a period of at least 1,500 years." People who know Chinese claim this font for China, Japanese claim it for themselves. It's just silly that the two can't agree.

While it is true that most Kanji are directly taken from Chinese, there are certain characters that are uniquely Japanese, which may have originally had Chinese roots, but have been changed to a point which one can no longer say "this is chinese." Of these, some have actually gone back to China.

If you know ANYTHING about Japanese at all you will know that Japanese has three writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana. Hiragana and Katakana were created by the government to promote literacy and are derived somewhat from Kanji. Hiragana and Katakana are sylabries, meaning each character expresses a sylabol such as "ro" or "na."

Kanji is used for many common words as well as words coming from china but NOT only words coming from china. Hiragana is used almost exclusively for words that are uniquely Japanese. Katakana is generally used for words coming from the western world, made up words, or simply due to preference.

Just make another point.. Japanese and Chinese are pretty dissimilar langauges. Anyone who hasn't studied, one, the other, or both languages, and the history there of should really withhold comment. They share some common vocabluary, but most of that is just through absorbtion.. just like many English and French words are used in every day Japanese.

Japanese are speculated to be ancestored by the Koreans NOT the Chinese. Japanese and Korean are audibly (though i cannot vouch for syntax) far more similar than Chinese (be it Mandarin or Cantonese) is to either of the two.

As an extra note: Korean writing can consists of two systems, one is adapted Chinese characters the other is a system created from scratch by Korean scholars to create a unique Korean system for expressing their langugae.

The entirety of this post is based in fact and is in no way speculatory as many of the above posts have been.

This is tiring. They're all Chinese except for zero. Zero is just the number zero while the Chinese character has "jintian", the character for today over "xia yu", the character for raining.

Zero is neither japanese, korean, other whatever.
